Matin Durrani

I’ve been editor of Physics World since 2006 and originally did a PhD in polymer physics with Athene Donald at the University of Cambridge. I still quite like thinking about practical, lab-based physics of that kind and I particularly enjoy blogging about science communication, history of physics and my various trips and visits around the world meeting all kinds of people in the physics community. Outside work, I’ve got an unhealthy interest in Birmingham City FC and the German language.

Michael Banks

I’m the news editor of Physics World and did a PhD in condensed-matter physics at the Max Planck Institute of Solid-State Physics in Stuttgart, Germany. Running the Quanta section of Physics World – featuring amusing stories from the world of physics – I never pass up the chance to blog about quirky stories such as the latest physics-based rap or a strange research finding (think IgNobel). Every now and then I also touch on the more serious issues in physics such as the latest big-science news or my travels to conferences and research labs.

Margaret Harris

I’m the industry editor of IOP Publishing’s journalism team, which includes managing the Physics World focus series. I often blog about science communication and outreach. I also retain a soft spot for experimental atomic physics, which I studied during my PhD at Durham University. I’ve been part of the Physics World team since 2008, but I’m not from these parts originally: I grew up in Kansas and lived in the US until 2003. Outside work, I’m a keen hill-walker (even when it’s raining!) and I enjoy reading about history, arguing about politics and becoming less incompetent at karate.

Tushna Commissariat

I am the reviews and careers editor of Physics World. I graduated with a BSc in physics from St Xavier’s College, Mumbai, India, before completing a Master’s in science journalism at City University, London. I particularly enjoy writing about cosmology, quantum mechanics and particle physics, although blogs about graphene, exoplanets and interesting images seem to crop up with alarming frequency! Aside from writing, my favourite pastimes include travelling, crosswords, star-gazing, science fiction and fantasy in all its forms, and spending a ridiculous amount of time on the Internet.

Louise Mayor

Before joining Physics World in 2010 as features editor, I did a PhD in dye-sensitized solar cells at the University of Nottingham. While doing night shifts at synchrotrons was perversely quite fun, I now get to learn about different areas of cutting-edge research as I help physicists and science writers to communicate their stories in the magazine. On the physicsworld.com blog I write about whatever tickles my fancy, be it painful physics punnery or Einstein, the world’s smallest horse. At evenings and weekends I can be found playing board games and making stuff out of yarn.

James Dacey

As Physics World’s multimedia editor I produce our videos, podcasts and various social-media activities. I’m particularly interested in the ”people” aspects of science – the personalities, the histories and the changing geography of where science is taking place in the world. I have a BSc in natural sciences from the University of Birmingham and an MSc in science, culture and communication from the University of Bath. When not wearing my Physics World hat I’ll frequently be found travelling, listening to music or trying to improve my Spanish.

Hamish Johnston

I am the editor of physicsworld.com and I did a PhD in condensed-matter physics at McMaster University in Canada. I am still fascinated by what is an extremely rich and varied subject that I believe is ignored by the media (Physics World excepted, of course). As a result, I’m happiest when I’m blogging about topological insulators, the latest quasiparticle or some other quirk of condensed matter. So if you spot something weird and wonderful in solid-state physics, please get in touch. In my spare time I am a Cub Scout leader.
